Money keyword research… what the heck is that?
One of the things that drives me absolutely nuts is people that are sucked into those paid services that tell you they will give you loads of keywords that you can dominate in the search engines with based on their competition/traffic ratios.
This on paper sounds great… well sort of. The problem is if the keywords are not associated with…
- The product you want to sell
- A buying audience
… well then you may as well just make up some random long tail term like “peanut butter race car stripes” and focus on that. You can then easily just rank in the search engines with little effort… your traffic will suck but hey you will be in the top position of Google!
The fact of the matter is, if you want to make money online in this affiliate game then you can not just look at traffic and competition ratios. The strategy I recommend to use is…
- Identify the product or service you want to promote. I personally always like to start with the product first. yes you can match a product later but i have always had better luck with starting with the product.
- Check the demand and market. Why reinvent the wheel… find something that is currently making money and figure out where the low hanging fruit is.
- Create a large list of keywords. I just use Google free keyword tools for this, it is fantastic data and free… a win+win!

- Identify winning words and confirm traffic. Once you find those good words, you want to double check that the traffic is truly there… no use wasting time on a word that will send you no visitors.
- Check keyword ranking results competition (ensure it is not attacked already by affiliates). Ensure that you are not competing against highly optimized and high authority sites PLUS ensure that the rankings are not already filled with Squidoo, Youtube and other web2 sources that show a high “seo affiliate” focus.
This strategy has never failed me and is what I use every time I research a keyword to market a specific product or service.
